WAIKIKI OFFSHORES SERIES

DAY ONE

Honolulu, Hi. U.S.A. The Waikiki Yacht Club held race one of the five race series in beautiful 85o weather and 15 to 25 knots of winds with 3-6 foot seas. The racecourse was set between Diamond Head and Kokohead giving the racers the same downwind ride as the final 5 miles of the Transpac Yacht Race. Two Transpac Aloha Class boats finished during the race and were a bit surprised to see Samba Pa Ti just in front of them until she doused her spinnaker at the leeward mark and headed back upwind.

On day one John Spadaro's Sydney 41 Boomerang was first in Division 1 ORR followed by Dave Nottage's J44 Kaimiloa II and John Kilroy's TP52 Samba Pa Ti in 3rd. The battle of the two Transpac ID35's continues with On the Edge of Destiny beating Tabasco for 4th.

In Division Two, Doug Taylor's X-35 Zamboni finished 1st with Cindy Wyrick's Sydney 36 2nd. Mark Denzer's Sonoma 30 Cowabunga finished 3rd with Tom Fisher's Henderson 30 Buzz Off fourth. Gil Budar's Farr 42 Gerontius returned to the dock before the race started with a torn mainsail.

In the overall scoring for the King Kalakaua Cup Trophy: Boomerang 1, Kaimiloa 2, Samba Pa Ti 3, Zamboni 4, Fins 5, Cowabunga 6, On the Edge of Destiny 7, Tabasco 8, Buzz Off 9, Gerontius 11.

PHRF Division 1 was won by Kaimiloa II with Samba Pa Ti 2nd, Boomerang 3rd, On the Edge of Destiny 4th and Tabasco 5th. Division II was won by Fins. Zamboni was 2nd, Cowabunga 3rd, Buzz Off 4th.

Two boats that just completed Transpac 2007 entered the Waikiki Offshore Series. Samba Pa Ti returned to the water Friday morning after finishing the 44th Transpac at 01:56:55 Thursday in 1st place in Division II. On the Edge of Destiny, the youngest teams to ever race a Transpac were happy to be back out sailing again in their home waters after finishing 3rd in Division V.

Racing continues with two races Saturday and two races Sunday. Tonight is the Legends of Pan Am Clipper Cups and Kenwood Cups reception sponsored by Sam Adams. The Sunday awards reception is sponsored by Bacardi rum.

Samson Ropes, Harken, Sam Adams, Full Power, Bacardi Rum and the Waikiki Yacht Club sponsor the Waikiki Offshore Series.
