NEWS For Immediate Release WAIKIKI OFFSHORES SERIES SAILING IN A HURRICANE Honolulu, Hi. U.S.A. The Waikiki Yacht Club announced today that the Molokai Race is cancelled. Not due to Hurricane Daniel but due to a lack of entries according to regatta chair Steve Thomas. "We need at least three boats to enter to make it a race. We have only one brave sole entered" “We are watching Hurricane Daniel as it approaches Oahu and will keep all of our racers advised of its progress. Its winds have dropped from 115 to 80 as of today but… as with all weather systems this time of year it has the potential to build and cause great damage. The 2006 WAIKIKI OFFSHORE SERIES will now start July 27 with two windward leeward races and continue to July 30 on the waters off Waikiki and the island of Oahu. It includes six buoy races and one medium distance race. The Waikiki Yacht Club standing sailing instruction cancel any racing if we have gale force winds in the channels. “We are watching the Daniel carefully and have the safety of the fleet as our first priority” according to Thomas. The Hawaii Tourism Authority, Samson Ropes, Harken, Sam Adams Beer, Full Power, Bacardi Rum and the Waikiki Yacht Club sponsor the Waikiki Offshore Series. |
