Waikiki Offshore Series

2005 Waikiki Offshore Series

Combining the aloha of Hawaii, a warm tropical experience and great trade wind sailing, the Waikiki Offshore Series perpetuates the unique racing experience that has been enjoyed by sailors for a quarter century.

Imagine surfing down the face of four to eight foot seas in 20-knot warm, balmy tropical trade winds. Combined with an enjoyable Hawaiian family holiday, the Waikiki Offshore Series is a truly unique experience and one not to be missed.

Racing in Hawaii

Drawing from the experience of the successful Royal Hawaiian Clipper Cup and Kenwood Cup series, the Waikiki Offshore courses include several offshore buoy races, a 40-mile intermediate course along the scenic leeward coast of Oahu and a 145-mile race across the channel between Oahu and Molokai. This racecourse takes the fleet along the spectacular cliffs of Molokai, around a mark off of Maui and returns to Waikiki.

In addition to the handicap divisions, which are structured according to the numbers and interests of registered boat owners, Waikiki Offshores extends an invitation to owners to create races for specific classes or divisions. This can include specific class boat divisions such as TP52's, J-105's and Cal 40's to name a few.

There are many exciting course options in Hawaii and Waikiki Offshore organizers will consider other courses according to the interest of its competitors. For example, races in the past have included the ultimate tactical challenge of a 700-mile around-the-major- islands race, combining light air sailing through the lee of the islands, windward beats along rugged coastlines and surfing through the channels and across the windward side of Hawaii’s spectacular islands; all, of course, in warm tropical trade winds.

Hawaiian Hospitality

The Waikiki Offshore Series is hosted by the Waikiki Yacht Club which has welcomed visiting sailors for over 60 years, including those in the world-renown Transpac Yacht Race. Located in Waikiki's Ala Wai Harbor it is a short sail to the offshore buoy races. After the races, a return to the harbor is followed by the hospitality of the Waikiki Yacht Club where social functions are available for the enjoyment of crews and families.

The warmth of the WYC is expressed by its members and other volunteers who are committed to doing all they can to make you feel the aloha of Hawaii. Entertaining events such as the infamous plywood cup and the weekly Friday Night Race with fireworks are just a few of the unique activities that insure everyone a memorable racing and family experience.

Waikiki Yacht Club offers a new state-of-the-art mooring facility for 156 boats up to 80 feet and an aloha dock that can accommodate up to 165 foot boats. Club facilities include a harbor side restaurant, bar and swimming pool and lounge area that all offer a full view of boats leaving and returning. Locker room facilities and meeting rooms are also available.

Family Opportunities

Hawaii is an alluring visitor destination and offers any number of opportunities for friends and family who remain on shore, Enjoying some quiet time on the sun bathed beaches on Waikiki, taking a tour of Iolani Palace, visiting the Arizona Memorial, snorkeling in Haunama Bay or a day trip to the Polynesian Cultural Center are all highly rated activities. Families can enjoy exploring individually by car, on guided tours or by Hawaii's public bus transportation system.

There is something for everyone and for any budget. The Waikiki Offshore Series Travel Coordinator is more than happy to assist with group rates and reservations for lodging or travel. The Ilikai Hotel overlooking the Ala Wai Harbor offers Waikiki Offshore Series participants special rates that can be found on our web page. www.waikikioffshores.com
